In fact, we routinely see teenagers in our two office locations every day as getting braces is a rite of passage of sorts when it comes to adolescence. During this period, Dr. Pristera can take advantage of the natural growth processes which are occurring, wherein he can design remarkable smiles that last a lifetime. When Does Teen Orthodontics Typically Begin?
Most adolescents begin orthodontic treatment between the ages of 11 and 15, because most of the permanent teeth are in place around the age of 12, which gives Dr. Pristera the best opportunity to detect common problems like misaligned teeth, malocclusions or “bad bites” and spaces between teeth.
Since it is common to see youngsters with braces on their teeth, teenagers tend to feel comfortable undergoing orthodontic treatment because they see their friends and classmates wearing braces too. Even teens who are reluctant to wear braces can be convinced to do so by reminding them that many of their friends are improving their smiles by wearing all types of orthodontic appliances including metal braces and translucent aligners.
Orthodontists can take advantage of the rapid rate of growth teenagers experience to help shape the bite and easily guide the teeth into the correct positions. Due to adolescents having high metabolisms, teenagers often experience less discomfort while also enjoying a shorter treatment time.
