You have probably heard of Invisalign®, a series of clear aligners that corrects even severe misalignment and bite issues over the course of 12-18 months. Well, now you can find out if your child is a candidate for Invisalign® First! This orthodontic treatment option is different from Invisalign® in that it is used during the first phase of treatment (often called phase 1).
How is Invisalign® First Different?
There are many similarities between Invisalign® First and Invisalign®, mainly that both systems use clear aligners to gradually move teeth into their correct positions. The difference is with Invisalign® First, it is recommended for children between the ages of 6 – 10 who still have baby teeth.
Invisalign® First differs from traditional Invisalign by giving the orthodontist specialized tools in the aligners themselves and in the treatment software for treating young children. These include specific design adjustments in the aligners provided by the smaller size of baby teeth. The aligners create space for new permanent teeth to erupt.
Is Your Child a Candidate for Invisalign® First?
The best way to correct misalignment, improper bites, or spacing issues is with early orthodontic intervention. One of the main problems that children face with their teeth is spacing. Whether a child loses a baby tooth too early, or a permanent tooth erupts prematurely pushing baby teeth out of alignment, treating these issues early can help eliminate further issues and set them up for better jaw and tooth alignment in the future.
Children who have these spacing issues are good candidates for phase 1 orthodontics – or Invisalign® First. Here are some benefits:
- Early intervention can prevent severe misalignment or spacing later on
- Clear aligners can help children feel more comfortable and confident
- Invisalign® First can decrease the length of time your child will need braces – making it more affordable in the long run
One important thing to consider as a parent is that these aligners are still clear and removable. It can be difficult for young children to remember to replace the aligners over their teeth after eating or brushing, so helping them with this process is essential to the success of the treatment.
